The Kidney Diseases and Transplantation Unit at Sohag University Hospital succeeds in Performing 25 Kidney Transplants and conducts 36,000 Dialysis Sessions in 2024

 

Dr. Hassan El-Nomani, President of Sohag University, said that the Kidney Diseases and Transplantation Unit in the Department of General Internal Medicine at Sohag University Hospital is one of the leading units in providing integrated services to kidney failure patients in the governorate, as it performed 30,450 dialysis sessions for kidney patients visiting it during 2024, in addition to conducting 5,450 sessions for emergency cases.

The unit also succeeded in ending waiting lists and performed 25 kidney transplant operations with a success rate exceeding 90%.

Al-Nomany said that the unit provides distinguished medical care to patients, starting from accurate diagnosis of cases, through appropriate treatment, and up to kidney transplant operations.

The unit is distinguished by providing the latest technologies and medical devices, in addition to the presence of a medical team specialized in the field of kidney diseases, as the importance of this unit lies in helping patients improve their quality of life by providing effective medical solutions for kidney failure.

Dr. Magdy El-Qadi, Dean of Faculty of Medicine, explained that the Kidney Diseases and Transplantation Unit is one of the units affiliated with the Department of General Medicine, and provides medical services to a wide range of patients, such as patients with acute and chronic kidney failure, patients with nephrotic syndrome, patients with immune diseases that affect the kidneys, and follow-up of cases before and after kidney transplantation and patients who need plasma separation sessions.

Dr. Ahmed Kamal Abdel Hamid, Executive Director of the University Hospitals, stated that the unit receives cases of acute and chronic kidney disease in the emergency department 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

It consists of a kidney dialysis unit at the old hospital headquarters, which includes 60 kidney dialysis machines, in addition to a kidney dialysis unit at the new hospital headquarters, which includes 40 kidney dialysis machines.

Dr. Nael Abdel Hamid, Head of the Internal Medicine Department, said that the total number of dialysis cases in the two units is approximately 300 patients, who receive regular dialysis sessions, at a rate of 3 sessions per week for each patient, and no less than 30 to 50 emergency dialysis sessions are given daily to new patients or patients affiliated with other dialysis units.

However, they had a medical need to receive a dialysis session at the university hospital, explaining that the unit conducts plasma separation sessions of no less than two to four sessions daily for patients with immune diseases, whether in the internal medicine department or other departments, such as the neurology and psychiatry department, the intensive care and anesthesia department, or the rheumatology and rehabilitation department no less than 30 to 40 cases visit the kidney diseases and transplantation clinic during the clinic’s official working days.
