
In a new medical achievement added to the record of Sohag University Hospital, the medical team at the Pediatric Catheterization Unit successfully performed three delicate and complex interventional catheterization surgeries for children between the ages of 3 and 13 in just one day, using the latest equipment and technologies.
Dr. Hassan Al-Nomani, President of the University, said that this success reflects the University’s ongoing support for the health sector and its commitment to providing modern capabilities and equipment that contribute to providing distinguished medical services to citizens.
He praised the high academic and professional level of the medical team at the University Hospital.
He emphasized that these operations reflect the extent of development of the pediatric catheterization unit in terms of personnel and capabilities, and represent an important step toward expanding the use of interventional catheterization as a safe and effective alternative to surgery.
Dr. Magdy El-Qady, Dean of Faculty of Medicine and Chairman of the Board of Directors of University Hospitals, said that the three operations represent a qualitative leap in the treatment of congenital heart defects in children, as they were performed using an interventional catheter without the need for open surgery, which contributes to reducing complications and accelerating recovery rates.
Dr. Ahmed Kamal Abdel Hamid, Executive Director of University Hospitals, explained that (3 years old girl), who was suffering from a hole between the ears, was treated and closed using an amplatzer device, and Maryam Ali (6 years old), who was suffering from a hole between the ears accompanied by an enlarged heart and a growth deficiency, was treated using a Life Tech device.
And Fatima (13 years old), who was suffering from a hole between the ventricles, which was closed using the Konar Life Tech device, which is one of the most modern hole closure devices in the world.
Dr. Abdul Rahim Abdul Rabbah, Head of the Pediatrics Department, stated that the Pediatric Cardiac Catheterization Unit provides services to a large segment of children inside and outside the governorate.
The unit includes Dr. Safaa Hussein, the unit’s supervisor, Dr. Yasmine Khalaf, and a number of resident physicians. The unit has successfully eliminated waiting lists for congenital heart defects, which included 115 cases last year.
